Personals - Society News Mr. and Mrs. H. H. McLean and son, Harry, were in Washington, D C. last week-end where Mr. Mc Lean went on business. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Paul and her father, of Washington, visited Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Stillman here last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Still left Thurs day for Blytheville, Arkansas, and Chicago. Mr. Still is expected to return here this week, but Mrs. Still w ill remain there a month. Walter Burgess, of Oak Ridge Military Institute, visited his par ents. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Burgess here last week-end. Mrs. Raymond Brown and little son, of Greenville, returned home this week after visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claus Blount, here. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ganderson and family, of Elizabeth City, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. G Walker entertained at a brilliant re ception at their Creswell home last Thursday evening, honoring Rev and Mrs. John W. Hardy, who were recently married. Harry Walker, jr., and Miss Marjorie Bateman greeted the guests at the door and then presented them to Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Bachman, who directed them to the living room, which was dec orated with pink and white dahlias. Receiving with Mr. and Mrs. Walk er were Rev. C. E. Williams, New Bern; Miss Lona Weatherly, Rev. and Mrs. John Hardy. Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Phelps, Washington, N. C.; Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Bachman, Columbia. Receiving in the dining room were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Starr. Salted nuts, ice cream and cake were served by Misses Viva Mae Williams, §allie Carter, Ada Spruill, Elizabeth Peel, and Marjorie Spruill while Mrs. Sidney Smithson, of Creswell, and Mrs. T. Wr. Armstrong, of Columbia, served punch. Betsy Anne and Janet Bachman served mints. As the guests left the dining room they were met by Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Phelps, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Peal, and Miss Ruth Miller. A total of 125 guests called during the evening MRS. ARPS ENTERTAINS WITH BRIDGE DINNER. Mrs. P. M. Arps entertained at bridge-dinner Wednesday. Guests, upon arrival found their places at the dining table which was covered with lace cloth and centered with a large bowl of fruit suggestive of Hallowe’en season. Shaded lamps and varied colored flowers lent 'harm to the occasion. Mrs. D. J. Brinkley was given a box of dusting powder as high scor er. a salt and pepper set going to Mrs. Corrinne Austin as honor a ward. A set of napkins was pre sented Mrs. J. W. Read, holder of low score. Mrs. Alban Papineau, special guest, was given a bottle of perfume. Miss Evelyn Arps assisted in serv ing a salad course and dessert. MRS. BLOUNT ENTERTAINS AT EIGHT TABLES OF BRIDGE. Mrs. Clarence Blount entertained at eight tables of bridge Thursday. The Hallowe'en season motif was carried out in tallies, refreshments and arrangements of lovely chrysan themums, roses and marigolds added brillance to the scene. A bowl of narcissi bulbs were giv en high scorers at each table with the following leading: Mesdames Frank Bateman, W. F. Winslow, Mary Smith Cahoon, W. H. Johnson, C. L. Bailey, Robert Johnston, P. H. Roberts and A. L. Owens. A salad plate was served by the hostess, as sisted by Mrs. Eddie Getsinger. MRS. LOUIS LUCAS HOSTESS TUESDAY Mrs. Louis Lucas entertained the Twin Bridge Club Tuesday night. Marigolds, roses and cosmos were used in decorating. Cards w'ere played at three tables. Potato chips were on the table during play and at conclusion fruit salad, crackers, fancy cakes, and hot coffee were served. A bowl of bulbs went to Miss An nie Myrtle Peal as high scorer, while Mrs. G. W. Hardison received an ash tray set as honor prize and a sachet set as low award. A satin boudoir pillow was given to Mrs. W. C. Chesson as leading guest scorer. LITERARY CLUB MEETS WITH MRS. DAVENPORT. ThF ^ftursday Afternoon Literary Club met with Mrs. Mary Cotton Davenport at Mackeys with Mrs. J. K. Reid presiding. Ways and means of enlarging the public library in Plymouth courthouse basement was discussed. Mrs. H. A. Blount gave a reading on the book. “I Walked Out” which portrays the life of Elsie Rob inson. well knowm author. A fried chicken dinner with des sert was served. The Hallowe’en color scheme was carried out in fa vors and decorations. LOCAL 4-H CLUB HOLDS FIRST MEETING MONDAY The eighth grade 4-H club of the Plymouth High School met with Miss Misenheimer October 26 for the first time this year. We organized our club with the DR. It was decided to sell sandwiches and drinks at the court house on election day. Ice box cake was served. HALLOWE'EN PARTIES BEING HELD THIS WEEK. Hallowe'en parties are in vogue here this week witli the first being held at Hampton Academy Thursday night for the benefit of the school. A second will be held at Pender’s old store on Water Street next to O. R. Leggett's Son on Friday night at 7:30 o’clock for the benefit of the Christian church.
